How can AI add a pair of brains to a common garbage truck? And how can you use similar technology to optimize your processes? These were the two key questions during the VOKA event at Rematics. Our AI expert Alexander Frimout took the stage to explain how AI is revolutionizing manufacturing.
Smart garbage trucks: AI meets waste collection
More than half of all mixed waste is still perfectly recyclable. Yet most of it goes straight to the incinerator. Rematics, a Hasselt-based company, wants to solve this problem by making garbage trucks smart, using a combination of AI and vision technology. We worked together with Rematics as their development partner.
Members of Voka Network R&D got to discover the technology behind this solution. Our expert Alexander then explained how AI can be widely used within manufacturing companies.

“In combination with vision, I see many opportunities for quality control. Our project for Duvel Moortgat is a prime example of this.”
“Firstly, computer vision is more consistent than the human eye. A camera and a database are always focused, even on a Friday afternoon. In addition, this combination is capable of detecting anomalies that are invisible to the naked eye.”
“Secondly, it is much faster. Classifying an image as good or bad 24/7 and in a fraction of a second – these are the tasks in which such systems excel.”
AI beyond production: supporting administrative processes
“For AI alone, and specifically LLM, we are looking at the administrative tasks supporting the actual processes,” Alexander concludes. “The enabling tasks. Everything related to receiving and shipping goods. Invoicing and quotations. Like this case study for EBTS’ invoice processing.”
